Understanding Therapy Services
Clear, practical information about physical, occupational, and speech therapy—what each discipline addresses, when services may be appropriate, and how to access care.
Three Disciplines. One Goal: Better Function.
Physical Therapy
Helps improve strength, balance, mobility, endurance, and safety. Physical therapy may address difficulty walking, recovering after surgery or illness, preventing falls, and using mobility equipment safely.
Occupational Therapy
Helps people complete daily activities as safely and independently as possible. Occupational therapy may address bathing, dressing, meal preparation, upper-extremity function, home safety, energy conservation, and adaptive equipment.
Speech-Language Pathology
Addresses communication, cognition, voice, and swallowing. Speech therapy may also help with memory, problem-solving, speech clarity (articulation), language, vocal strength, and safe eating and drinking.
How to Access Therapy
Therapy may be provided through various clinical delivery settings, including home health agencies, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, or private-pay practices. The appropriate setting depends on the individual’s medical needs, mobility, insurance coverage, and healthcare provider recommendations.
How Care to Keys Can Help
Care to Keys offers private in-home physical, occupational, and speech therapy based on clinician availability. We also provide clinicians through contracted home health agency partners. For individuals who are not homebound or no longer qualify for home health services, we can help coordinate mobile outpatient physical and occupational therapy delivered in the home through Mercy’s Touch Physical Therapy and Wellness.
The treating provider and the individual’s insurance plan determine coverage and eligibility.
